President Putin just hit a checkmate freeing up Mikhail Khodorkovsky, ex oil tycoon, former CEO of YUKOS and fierce opponent to Putin´s rule. No matter what western media will argue and comment about it, it was just a calculated move by the Kremlin, linked to all the geopolitical puzzle going on now with Ukraine, the Iskander missiles placed in Kaliningrad, and the forecoming Winter Olympic Games in Sochi on February 2014. Its a political and strategic move by Mr Putin to show the world that there´s room in Russia for human rights and political rights respect, aside from other phenomenons like Pussy Riots and so on. Now that Russia is on its track to assert itself as a world megaplayer, and not just regional, apart from natural gas and oil, it wants to play with other so called "western" tools, like human rights, freedom of press, etc. And Mr Putin knows he is on his momentum, amongst other world leaders, in terms of power grip and strong leadership. Lets see what will be the fate of other prominent opposition leaders such as Alexander Navalny, putting just one example. And taking into consideration the situtation in Ukraine, Mr Putin seemingly is trying to detach himself from Mr Yanukovich coercive mechanisms on Euromaidan protests, even though trying to preserve Ukraine under russian sphere of influence. So this amnesty to Mikhail Khodorkovsky is a very brilliant move, which could have a strong geopolitical impact both to russian public opinion and for its international position. So checkmate for Mr Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin!
