In the middle of a renewed tension between China, South Korea and Japan over the creation of an air defense identification zone (ADIZ) by China, Washington tries to keep up and maintain its long quasi eternnal though mybe waning position in the zone, reflecting itself overtly as a Seul-Tokyo supporter against China growing preeminence, and as an added value, Russia is becoming a reliable energy as well as a military partner of China. The thing is if the Obama administration wants to raise the stakes with China on the ilitary field, giving the fact that the White House once again is taking sides in this region, having China the North Korean bargaining chip in the whole context, if the US administration threatens Beijing with concrete actions against its position in the region. This whole geopolitical area is not really easy, remembering the fact the there´s the oil and gas key factor on the East China Sea, as well as the whole region is quickly becoming an energy hub worldwide (i.e, Burma, Australia, Vietnam, Indonesia, China, etc) so the energy is a key point for Washington to reassert itself in the ASEAN members realm. The whole idea of having the chinese monitoring air space, patrolling the waters, together for example with russian and iranian support within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization mechanism of military drills, just give the Pentagon goosebumps, and just wont stand it. But the whole point is energy. East China Sea is a huge hub of oil and gas reserves, which according to the Energy Information Administration of the US could hold approximately 60 to 100 million barrels of oil of probable and proven reserves, and has been scenario for sino-japanese clashes for many times. Australia holds important natural gas reserves currently. Burma surprisingly is attracting foreign companies to develop its considerable oil and gas reserves off shore. And Russia wants to be in too, as a reliable oil and gas supplier both for China and Japan as well. So this is all about energy. The USA wants to be in Southeast Asia not just for posing against the ADIZ but to tell the whole region that it wants its own piece of the energy reserves there.
